The area where Granada Hills now sits today was originally part of a farming community. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the land was a working dairy farm and orchard that grew apricots, oranges, walnuts, and beans. Traces of its citrus-growing past remain in the present day, with orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees still growing in many backyards.

The seeds of this early community grew further, and eventually, the neighborhood was officially founded as “Granada” in 1926. It became “Granada Hills” as new housing and other developments moved into the foothills. And by 1942, the community was officially named “Granada Hills,” a nod to both its scenic hillside setting and evolving identity.

Much of what we know as Granada Hills today dates to its mid-20th century suburban growth following World War II. The 1920 and 1930s laid the foundation and initial inventory of housing, but it was that post-war growth spurt that expanded real estate options in the area.

That’s why it’s common to find classic ranch homes, split-levels, and Mid-Century Modern designs throughout the neighborhood—each reflecting the architectural trends and suburban ideals of the era. Granada Hills offers a quieter, more relaxed pace while staying well connected to the rest of Los Angeles. The Ronald Reagan Freeway (118) divides the neighborhood into north and south and links directly to the 405, I-5, 101, and 210 freeways.

Balboa Boulevard, Zelzah Avenue, Rinaldi Street, and Devonshire Street are the main thoroughfares. Public transportation includes Metro and LADOT bus lines, with Balboa Boulevard routes connecting to the G Line in Van Nuys and LADOT’s Commuter Express 573 offering peak-hour service to Union Station.

If you’re taking into consideration air travel, Granada Hills is about 20 to 30 minutes from Hollywood Burbank Airport and roughly 30 to 45 minutes from LAX, depending on traffic.

Outdoor Recreation

Surrounded by hiking trails, parks, and stunning hilltop views, it’s easy to stay active and spend time outdoors in Granada Hills.

O’Melveny Park is one of the most popular outdoor escapes near the neighborhood. As the second-largest park in Los Angeles, it offers more than 670 acres of open natural terrain and open space — in the form of hiking and jogging trails, picnic areas, and sweeping views of the Santa Susana Mountains. For steeper climbs and rewarding views, try making it to Mission Point (Or “Mission Peak” as the locals like to say).

Aliso Canyon Park extends the area’s trail network into neighboring Porter Ranch, while Zelzah Park and Petit Park round out the local green space with picnic areas. Petit Park is also just next door to the Granada Hills Branch Library along Petit Avenue. As part of the Los Angeles Public Library system, the branch offers books, computers, digital resources, and community services for local residents.

Meanwhile, for the avid and casual golfers, Knollwood Country Club is a longtime favorite. The 18-hole public golf course takes advantage of the area’s natural terrain and offers a reasonably challenging layout for players of all skill levels.

Another signature tradition is the Granada Hills Holiday Parade. This festive procession held each December has been part of the community for decades, features a parade of festive floats, marching bands, equestrian units, drill teams, and antique cars.
